The answer may surprise you, and chances are, you are NOT!
At the time of writing this article (10/17/17), there are over 13,000 Affiliates in the world, and less than 550 Certified CrossFit Trainers. That is one Certified Trainer for every 24 CrossFit Affiliates. Chances are you are not training with a certified professional as the majority of CrossFit Affiliates do not have a single Certified CrossFit Trainer. Here at CrossFit 760 we have three Certified CrossFit Trainers dedicated to our members.
A typical CrossFit Affiliate will have a team of “Coaches” who run their classes, develop programming, assign nutrition plans, etc… However, all CrossFit Trainers are not created equally.
The majority of CrossFit Affiliates have a staff comprised of:
- CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1) Certificate Holder
- CrossFit Level 2 (CF-L2) Certificate Holder
These are certificate holders and not CERTIFIED Trainers. Ideally you are trusting your health and wellness to a Certified CrossFit Trainer (CF-L3) or at a minimum your Affiliate should be led by a Certified CrossFit Trainer.
Minimum Standards CrossFit Level 1 (CF-L1)
- Attend a 2-day seminar
- Take and pass multiple choice test
From there, they are free to begin honing their skills for years to come.
Minimum Standards CrossFit Level 2 (CF-L2)
- Everything for CF-L1 – Plus…
- Attend a 2-day seminar
When a Trainer has decided that teaching functional movements to others is no longer something to do a few hours a week, they can separate themselves from their peers by attaining the Certified CrossFit Trainer credential.
Minimum Standards Certified CrossFit Trainer (CF-L3)
- Everything for CF-L1 & CF-L2
- 750 hours of coaching CrossFit for group or individuals
- Maintain a current CPR certification
- Abide by the CrossFit Standards of Professional Practice
- Pass a Comprehensive Exam
What is a Certified CrossFit Trainer (CF-L3)?
According to https://certifications.crossfit.com/ccft/
The Certified CrossFit Trainer (CCFT) credential is for an experienced individual who wants to demonstrate a higher level of CrossFit coaching knowledge and ability. The purpose of the CCFT is to ensure that an individual possesses the knowledge and competency required to train clients safely and effectively.
To attain this credential individuals must meet all eligibility requirements, pass the CCFT examination, and commit to a long-term standard of professional accountability.
Becoming a Certified CrossFit Trainer is not for those who enjoy coaching; it’s for those who are passionate about it.
A Certified CrossFit Trainer is not for someone who likes to read articles about movement; this is for those who have educated themselves about it.
To become a Certified CrossFit Trainer there is a rigorous and comprehensive exam, this exam, presently serves as the gatekeeper separating those who care enough to improve and those that don’t.
Further cementing the comparison, you can think about a CF-L1 recipient as someone who partakes in the CrossFit Games Open. The barrier to entry is low, and all are welcome to do it.
Those with their CF-L3 should be thought of as athletes who have qualified all the way to the CrossFit Games, as they have separated themselves from all others, and are explicitly looking to be better. For anyone unfamiliar with CrossFit, rest assured that the difference is massive.
CrossFit 760 is home to three CERTIFIED CrossFit Trainers with more on the way. We take pride in the hard work and dedication they have for their careers. These certified Trainers serve as the leaders in our pursuit to providing world class coaching to our clientele. CrossFit 760 is lucky to have such devoted, educated staff members who double as an excellent model for all other trainers and Affiliates to follow.
If you are considering membership with us here at CrossFit 760, you can rest assured that you are in good, qualified hands. Our collective 60+ years of experience and expertise with 7 full time Trainers will ensure that you safely enjoy even the worst of workouts.
It is important to know who you are training with and why you are trusting your health and wellness with them. If your current coach is not certified or your Affiliate is not led or managed by a certified Trainer, ask them why.
If you are looking for more, or a better experience, seek out a CF-L3 Trainer and see the difference yourself.
